Independent Reading Response for 30 April 2018

My reading goal for this quarter was to read about 3-4 hours per week. I reached this girl because I have recently been spending an hour every night reading. This is because I found a few books about a futuristic world with a virtual reality element that I am very interested in.

I just finished reading a book called Warcross. This book is centered around a girl named Emika Chen. Emika wanted to pay off all the gambling debts and rent left behind by her dead father so she tried to catch a bounty for the police department but that didn't work. There is an international VR gaming event in this book that is more popular than any sport. Because she couldn't pay the debts she attempts to hack into one of the international Warcross games and Steve a powerful which could be cashed in for thousands of dollars but she accidentally glitched herself into the game. This made her an international overnight celebrity because no one had ever hard Warcross before. The book details her adventures as she joins an international Warcross team and attempts to stop a master hacker. One aspect I found unrealistic in the book was the final plot twist. They reveal that the games creator is using the VR technology, which was used by billions worldwide, to control people's minds and make them less violent. While this seems like a benign goal, the morals of it are horrendous.
